Together with Sonia Livingstone (London School of Economics and Political Science), Eva Lievens (Ghent University) and Christina Lamprou (Presidency of the Government), Katharine Sarikakis will host the panel "The right to privacy in social media times: what do children think?" on October 12, 2021, starting at 2.30pm at the Fundamental Rights Forum 2021, taking place October 11-12, 2021 in Vienna, Austria.

What are the voices of children as emerging citizens and how can we protect their right to privacy? This session focuses on the experiences of 11–16-year-olds, drawing upon empirical research with children from several countries as important stakeholders in their right to take part in policymaking that affects them. We invite a critical perspective on:

a. how to better respectfully integrate children's expertise in the protection of their rights on social media platforms and the internet and;

b. contribute to a more complex understanding of the need for the protection of privacy as a right not just on its own merit but as a fundamental pillar of a democratic polity.
